Clark University

Clark University opened in 1889 and was the first all-graduate university in the U.S. Clark University admitted women in 1900. The university opened an undergraduate college in 1902.

Francis Sumner earned his Ph.D. in 1920. Caroline Osborne becomes the first woman to be awarded a Clark Ph.D.

“African-American Francis Cecil Sumner earns a Ph.D. in psychology at Clark, the first black person in the U.S. to earn a doctorate in that field. He would go on to find the department of psychology at Howard University.” www.clarku.edu/
