In 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dred Scott v. Sanford was a landmark decision where the court denied citizenship to all African Americans. Therefore, slaves, ex-slaves, and descendants of slaves were denied citizenship and had no standing to sue in court. In addition, the ruling denied Congress the right to prohibit slavery in the territories.

The schooner Clotilda was the last U.S. slave ship to bring slaves from Africa into the U.S. lands in Mobile Bay, Alabama.
