In 1848, Massachusetts opened the first state reform school for children. Students were sent to reform school, for crimes of truancy, or when the courts decided it would be in the public interest. In 1886, the school was moved and renamed the Lyman School for boys. The school remained open until 1971, with approximately 300 students “graduating” from Lyman a year.
