Congress made it illegal to teach Native American children in their own language. Children as young as 4 years old were taken to off-reservation boarding school to be civilized through education. A popular saying of the time was “Kill the indian, save the man.” The photos are Native American students of Chiricahua Apache tribe. The first photo was upon their arrival to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, in Carlisle, Pa in 1886. The second pictures was taken 4 months later.
