Eveyln Hooker was raised in poverty in the midwest and was eventually awarded a scholarship to the University of Colorado in 1924 and was awarded her PhD in 1932. While teaching at UCLA, one of her students requested her to conduct research on homosexual men. in 1957, her research demonstrated that expert clinical psychologists could not distinguish between the projective test results of homosexual men compared to heterosexual men, nor were and differences in the ratings of their psychological adjustment observed. This finding lead to the removal of homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
