In 1807 the United States federal law enacted the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves, stating no new slaves were permitted into the United States. Congress gave slave traders nine months to close down their operations. Americans continuing to participate in the trade were subjects to fines up to $20,000 and no less than 5 years of jail time.
