Great Migration

1910

During 1910 and 1970 the “Great Migration” occurred which was the movement of 6 million African Americans out of rural Southern states to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West. Principal destinations during this period were the big cities of: New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and Pittsburgh. Populations also increased in the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Phoenix, Seattle, and Portland due this movement.
