Industrial Revolution

Late 1700’s – 1900’s

Machinery

The Industrial Revolution began in the late 1700’s in Europe and the United States of America. During this 100+/- year period, rural farming societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing was often done in people’s homes, using hand tools or basic machines. Technological advances during this period lead to the creation of factories and mass production that relied on special-purpose machinery. While this made consumer goods more readily available and improved standard of living for some, it also resulted in grim employment and living conditions for the poor and working classes.
