A Russian physiologist, most well known for his work on classical conditioning. He earned his degrees from Saint Petersburg University and the Military Medical Academy. In 1870 he enrolled at the University of Saint Petersburg to pursue his interest in science. While attempting to study the digestive responses of dogs in his laboratory, he realized that the dogs began to salivate in response to a variety of stimuli which were presented before an administration of powdered meat. This discovery that animals have the capability of having reflexes triggered by important environmental stimuli would go on to influence the field of behaviorism. Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1904 for his work in this field.
