Jim Crow was the name of the racial caste system operated in southern and border states, between 1877 until the mid-1960s. Jim Crow were state and local laws enforcing segregation and leading to a series of rigid anti-black laws. Under Jim Crow, African Americans were relegated to the status of second class citizens. Jim Crow represented the legitimization of anti-black racism.
Examples of Jim Crow etiquette:
- A black man could not offer his hand to a white male because that implied social equality.
- Blacks and whites were not supposed to eat together.
- White motorists have the right-of-way at all intersections.
