Reconstruction

1865-1877

The time period after the Civil War in the United States was known as Reconstruction. During this time the federal government enacted laws to allow the Southern States to return to the Union. The goal of these laws was to provide blacks with full political and civil equality. In 1865, General Sherman issued a field order granting freed slaves 40 acres of land and a mule.

After 1867, southern whites turned to violence in response to changes of the reconstruction. Racism was still potent as Republicans became more conservative. The Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist organizations targeted the leaders who challenged white authority.
