By 1870, only 30,000 of 4 million African Americans owned land in the South. Instead many African Americans were sharecroppers. This system often resulted in African Americans owing money to their landlords for the use of machinery and supplies. Some African Americans were able to move from sharecropping to rental of land but many went into debt and remained in poverty.
