Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who later became known as the father of psychoanalysis. He initially worked as a doctor of medicine having earned his degree in 1881 at the University of Vienna. He eventually moved onto finding psychoanalysis as a method for treating psychopathology by talking with a patient. He would go onto to develop ideas like the Oedipus and Electra Complex based on his perceived importance of one’s sexual development. Freud also created a theory of consciousness based on repressed feelings and wishes. Psychoanalysis still remains to be influential within psychology, psychiatry, and therapy and many of his terms have found themselves within Western popular culture.
