The first tribal college, Navajo Community College (renamed Diné College in 1977), was opened in 1968 to counter high college-dropout rate for Native students. Today, there are 35 tribal colleges in 13 states.
American Indian Higher Education Consortium founded 1973
A community of 37 tribal colleges and universities work and strengthen tribal nations. The AIHEC represents its member institutions through advocacy, research and program initiatives to ensure tribal sovereignty through higher education.
