Underground railroad

The Underground Railroad was established in the early 1800’s. In 1831, the Underground Railroad is given its name. It consisted of a network of secret routes and safe houses used by slaves in the 19th century to escape to free states and Canada. It is estimated that by 1850, 100,000 slaves had used the ‘Railroad’ to escape. It ended approximately in 1862 with the start of The Civil War.
