The University of Georgia began admitting students in 1801. The first woman was accepted in 1919. In 1961 Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were admitted desegregating the University. This is considered a defining moment in civil rights history, leading to the desegregation of other institutions of higher education in Georgia and throughout the Deep South
