Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, John, who was attending the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, asking that he and the other men–who were at work on the Declaration of Independence–“Remember the Ladies.”

John responded with humor,  “The Declaration’s wording specifies that ‘all men are created equal.”

Voting 2

The first presidential election in the United States of America under the new United States Constitution, took place from December 1788 until January 1789. There was no agreement reached on federal voting standards. States were given the right to regulate their own voting laws. In most states voting rights were restricted to property owners, predominantly white males. In this election, George Washington was unanimously elected for the first of his two terms as president, and John Adams became the first vice-president.
